The Old Mechanic
The old mechanic yearned for the days of the Volkswagen–
when plenty was enough–before the greed and cruelty,
before the insatiable need for more.

My pleasure. It’s always so fun to see what everyone comes up with.

Lovely and so true, Rob. You’ve reminded me of my father’s comments about old cars. He loved to tinker and do car maintenance, but when cars started getting so complicated that you couldn’t do the simplest tasks it killed the magic for him. Have a great week.

Marvelous, Rob. Funny though, I remember shade-tree mechanics always complaining about how difficult foreign cars were to fix — particularly any Volkswagen. I had a VW Rabbit that was a particular nightmare. π Love the poem though. Hugs.

I never heard that. People who owned them said they never broke down. There was even a joke about that in an old Woody Allen movie: https://youtu.be/yyy3hVIgJM8

I had a 1978 Toyota FJ 40 Land Cruiser and pretty much did the restorative mechanical work myself. That included new engine seals, electrical wiring, brake, and clutch hydraulics. All one needed was the repair manual, and you were good to go. (I sold it in 2016)

I had a friend a VW Bug. It never broke down and seemed to run on fumes.

There was something satisfying about having things you could fix and keep for a good long time. Nice one, Rob.
