Fabulous artwork, Rob. Whoever the artist is, he/she is clearly talented. Christmas in July sounds about right. I’ve already received my first Christmas catalogue. As an early bird, I appreciate it, though.
What’s the city’s stance on murals and graffiti, Rob? Do artists need permission to do work like the one in this post, or can they go ahead and do it? I’m just thinking about how I’d react if somebody painted something like that on the side of my house or on the building of a business I owned.
I have to take a look at the law to give you a precise answer. Most of this work is done on abandoned buildings and in alleyways. Some of it is commissioned. One of the most popular public galleries in the City is on Clarion Alley in the Mission District. I’ll look it up the law regarding this later today because now I’m curious.
I see no problem with it being done on abandoned buildings, Rob. However, it would be such a shame if lots of this great artwork got destroyed when the buildings are taken down. Here in the UK, if Banksy leaves his artwork on your property, you can make a lot of money out of it. It happend to a family in a town next to Swansea just before Christmas last year.
Hi Hugh. We lose incredible works of public art when a building is torn down. We also lose them to time, tagging and weather. How great for that lucky family. Banksy is a phenomenal artist.
What a beautifully done mural, Rob. Thanks for sharing it.
While not the same mood as your post, I keep thinking that it looks a lot like Kurt Russell as Santa Clause.
Just barely in time for “Christmas in July” even though I have a hard enough time dealing with it in December. LOL.
That was my thought when I first saw it. I didn’t know about Kurt Russell but I did think he looked like Santa Clause. I’ll check out the Russell video.
So, that is awesome to know! That gives even more meaning to the song and to the message. Also it feels like looking back in his own life when he sang it as a young and now as a much older man. I love that!
Love Neil Young! And that mural speaks volumes.

There are two names on the mural. I’m not sure if either of them are the artists. But you’re right, it’s a beautiful mural.

Thanks Ivor. I processed the photo to bring out the lines around his eyes. I was also lucky to find the mural while it was still relatively fresh.

Neil Young wrote that song when he was 24. At the time of the video he was 69. It’s a great song and I hear wisdom in the way he sings it now.
