Corporate Media and Bias by Omission

First posted July 26, 2016.

I wrote this post after I noticed a discrepancy between the Democratic Convention I was watching and one reported in the media. This was the first time I noticed disinformation in the mainstream press. The post is even more relevant now that we know our media was under the influence of Kremlin propaganda.  Please note, I’m not calling our legitimate press fake news.  Plenty of reasonable people believed the lies peddled by Putin’s web brigades.

I don’t normally watch political conventions but this year I’ve  watched both.

As with most Bernie supporters I’m sick of watching the erosion of my wealth by people who spread hatred and fear in an elitist game of divide and conquer.

These are the kinds of people who thought it was OK to euthanize people
with mental illness.

These are the kinds of people who thought it was OK to use poor kids as cheap labor.

These are the kinds of people who think it’s OK to force 40 million children to go hungry in a nation of people who throw away almost as much as we eat.

Speeches by Democrats are usually a tepid echo of the more fiery
rhetoric
delivered by the true believers on the Right.

These were passionate democrats.

The First Lady was brilliant:

“That is the story of this country, the story that has brought me to this stage tonight, the story of generations of people who felt the lash of bondage, the shame of servitude, the sting of segregation, but who kept on striving and hoping and doing what needed to be done so that today, I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves — (applause) — and I watch my daughters –- two beautiful, intelligent, black young women –- playing with their dogs on the White House lawn. (Applause.) And because of Hillary Clinton, my daughters –- and all our sons and daughters -– now take for granted that a woman can be President of the United States.” Michelle Obama 2016

Michelle Obama made me proud as a Citizen of the United States of America.

When we unite around a principled stand for the Rule of Law and human rights we set people free.

Elizabeth Warren delivered a speech from the Occupy Movement:

“And here’s the thing. America isn’t going broke. The stock market is breaking records. Corporate profits are at all time highs… There is lots of wealth in America but it isn’t trickling down to hard-working families like yours. Does anyone here have a problem with that? Well I do, too. People get it. The system is rigged. It’s true. Now, so-called experts claim America’s in trouble because both political parties in Washington refuse to compromise — gridlock. That is just flat wrong. Washington works great for those at the top. When giant companies wanted more tax loopholes, Washington got it done. When huge energy companies wanted to tear up the environment, Washington got it done… Try to do something, anything, for working people and you’ll have a fight on your hand.” Elizabeth Warren 2016

Cory Booker gave an impassioned account of our Nation’s struggle with its imperfections:

“Our founding documents were genius. But not because they were perfect. They were saddled with the imperfections and even the bigotry of the past. Native Americans were referred to as savages, black Americans were referred to as fractions of human beings, and women were not mentioned at all.

But those facts and other ugly parts of our history don’t detract from our nation’s greatness. In fact, I believe we are an even greater nation, not because we started perfect, but because every generation has successfully labored to make us a more perfect union. Generations of heroic Americans have made America more inclusive, more expansive, and more just.

Our nation was not founded because we all looked alike, or prayed alike, or descended from the same family tree. But our founders, in their genius, in this, the oldest constitutional democracy, put forth on this earth the idea that all are created equal; that we all have inalienable rights.

And upon this faithful foundation we built a great nation, and today, no matter who you are – rich or poor, Asian or white, man or woman, gay or straight, any religion or none at all – you are entitled to the full rights and responsibilities of citizenship. “Cory Booker 2016

Sanders placed principles above personality and described how he leveraged the power of his movement:

It is no secret that Hillary Clinton and I disagree on a number of issues. That’s what this campaign has been about. That’s what democracy is about. But I am happy to tell you that at the Democratic Platform Committee there was a significant coming together between the two campaigns and we produced, by far, the most progressive platform in the history of the Democratic Party. Among many other strong provisions, the Democratic Party now calls for breaking up the major financial institutions on Wall Street and the passage of a 21st Century Glass-Steagall Act.

It also calls for strong opposition to job-killing free trade agreements like the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Our job now is to see that platform implemented by a Democratic Senate, a Democratic House and a Hillary Clinton presidency – and I am going to do everything I can to make that happen. Bernie Sanders 2016

Moreover Sanders asserted that he and Clinton were collaborating on a piece of legislation:

“…During the primary campaign, Secretary Clinton and I both focused on this issue but with different approaches. Recently, however, we have come together on a proposal that will revolutionize higher education in America. It will guarantee that the children of any family this country with an annual income of $125,000 a year or less – 83 percent of our population – will be able to go to a public college or university tuition free. That proposal also substantially reduces student debt.” Bernie Sanders 2016

I heard a few boos from the crowd.

I heard chants of black lives matter.

I saw fierce loyalty on the faces of Bernie’s supporters but I also
heard Sanders say very clearly that much of what they want is
in the platform.

I don’t agree that this is the most progressive platform in the history
of the Democratic Party but it’s the most progressive I’ve seen in
decades.

But I saw no concessions to the right on first night of this Convention.

I’m hyper vigilant even when watching T.V.

I notice everything.

I saw none of the chaos and rage that I saw at the GOP Convention in Cleveland.

Imagine my surprise when I went to my favorite corner store this morning and read this headline on the San Francisco Chronicle:

Art by Rob Goldstein
Pleas for Unity Fall on deaf ears?

I took a closer look at the story:

Art by Rob Goldstein
The dominant word was Booooooo?

The headline and story are bias by omission

It perpetuates the lie that the Democratic Party is the same
as Republican Party.

That somehow the two political parties are morally
equal with the bar set low.

I heard Democrats calling for national unity.

I did not hear a single Democrat refer to Republicans as the enemy
as I did at the Republican convention
:

“…our enemy is not other Republicans, but is Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party.”

“We are the conservative party under God,” Mark Burns 2016

Republicans are not part of one nation under God.

They are the Conservative Party under God.

I think that makes a big difference but maybe I missed something.

Please describe what you saw if you watched the speeches on the first night of the Democratic Convention.

The only way to correct the corporate bias of our media is for us to report what we saw.

The San Francisco Chronicle is owned by the Hearst Corporation.

Below is a little info about the Hearst Corporation

A Flight of Ideas: Ruminations

Judy asked if I was ready to come
out on the floor.

Think of it: come out on the floor.

What does it mean?

Say it enough and it’s meaningless.

Come Out. On. The. Floor.

Say it enough and it’s paralyses.

The position I’m in right now?

I’m on a mat in the seclusion room.

The walls are wet and swell with milk
for me.

With milk. For me.

I for one will never believe I am
Christ; the responsibility is enough
to bust a nut!

But I’m lonely.

All I really want is to love.

Is that wrong?

Judy asked if I’m ready to come out

Think of it: come out. on the floor.

What can it mean?

“I only read simple things.” I reply.

President Puppet

First posted November 16, 2016.

A graphic showing Vladimir Putin as a puppet master and Donald Trump as his puppet.
Putin’s Puppet. Found on Twitter.

The post is more relevant in light of our Government’s confirmation
that Putin used multiple strategies to steal the U.S. election for Donald
Trump,

The former director of the KGB does not have friends; he has subjects, operatives, and useful idiots: he has puppets.

Putin’s favored weapon against enemy governments is weaponized disinformation.

A disinformation campaign is a long-term strategy designed to divide a nation’s people, cause them to mistrust their own system of government and to ultimately lose their sense of reality.

The only conspiracy Trump’s supporters don’t buy is the one where they
are targeted and used as unwitting tools.

Putin’s targets are people so uninformed that they honestly don’t know
that the President has a constitutional obligation to fill vacant court
seats.

To get sense of the force of the attack on their emotions and intellect view the video below.

A vote stolen with lies is still a stolen vote.

Putin hacked the 2016 elections and he won .

That’s some wild ass conspiracy theory, right?

This was not only the dirtiest campaign in U.S. history, it was the most psychologically abusive.

For Russia and Putin, a Surprise Gift from America

“If Europe was important, however, finding the means to sow doubt and insecurity about the political system in the United States, the last remaining superpower, was the big prize.

Television has been relentless in trying to paint the American system as flawed, suggesting that the process was not better than that in Russia. One prominent Russian politician even joked about it before the votes came in.

Gennadi A. Zyuganov, the longstanding leader of the Communist Party, said that Mrs. Clinton was smart but not good for Russia. “If Americans will vote honestly, I think Trump will make it, but if they will vote like here, then Hillary will win,” he said.

If the Cold War was rooted in ideological differences, the new Russian goal is to show that all political systems are equally bad. Also by interfering in conflicts like those in Ukraine and Syria, Mr. Putin has sought to reassert Russia’s role as a global power to be reckoned with.

Dmitry Kiselyev, the most prominent anchor on state television, called the United States election campaign the dirtiest in that country’s history, saying it provoked “disgust” toward what is somehow still called democracy.

The photo that illustrates the story in the New York Times gives me chills:

A photo of a poster of Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin as seen in a photograph taken on a Moscow Street.
A Poster of Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin as seen in a photograph taken on a Moscow Street

I like to say the difference between a Conspiracy Theory and a Conspiracy are facts.

Fact: The U.S. Government is still taking action against what it describes as a Russian attack on our political Process.

Fact: Putin’s preferred weapon against ‘enemy’ states is Weaponized Disinformation.

The New York Times, AUG. 5, 2016 For Putin, Disinformation Is Power

Fifteen years ago, a few months into his presidency, Vladimir V. Putin told Larry King on CNN that his previous job as a K.G.B. officer had been like that of a journalist. “They have the same purpose of gathering information, synthesizing it and presenting it for the consumption of decision makers,” he said. Since then, he has excelled at using the media to consolidate power inside Russia and, increasingly, to wage an information war against the West.

So the apparent hacking by Russian security services of the Democratic National Committee emails, followed by their publication by WikiLeaks, should come as no great surprise to Americans. It is only the latest example of how Mr. Putin uses information as a weapon. And the Kremlin has cultivated ties with WikiLeaks for years.

The Boston Globe, September 2016 How much is Russia trying to influence internal US affairs?

“US intelligence and law enforcement agencies are investigating what they see as a broad covert Russian operation in the United States to sow public distrust in the presidential election and in US political institutions, intelligence and congressional officials said.”

The Wall Street Journal, November 2014 Putin’s Disinformation Matrix

Propaganda is closely integrated with the Kremlin’s model of ambiguous warfare, which relies on rapid action, covert troops, the creation of a digital fog of war, and inflaming ethnic and sectarian tensions. Western governments shouldn’t overreact to RT’s presence in the West. But they can take the opportunity to revamp and modernize their own public diplomacy, targeting ethnic-Russian audiences to ensure that accurate reporting stands a chance amid the blizzard of Moscow’s lies.

Fact: Russia is the confirmed the culprit in the computer hacks on the DNC.

The New York Times July, 2016 Spy Agency Consensus Grows That Russia Hacked D.N.C.

American intelligence agencies have told the White House they now have “high confidence” that the Russian government was behind the theft of emails and documents from the Democratic National Committee, according to federal officials who have been briefed on the evidence.

But intelligence officials have cautioned that they are uncertain whether the electronic break-in at the committee’s computer systems was intended as fairly routine cyberespionage — of the kind the United States also conducts around the world — or as part of an effort to manipulate the 2016 presidential election.

Bloomberg, October 7, 2017 U.S. Publicly Blames Russia for Hacking to Disrupt Elections

The U.S. said publicly for the first time that intelligence agencies are “confident that the Russian government directed” the hacking of American political groups and leaked stolen material in order to interfere with the Nov. 8 election.

“These thefts and disclosures are intended to interfere with the U.S. election process,” the Office of Director of National Intelligence and the Department of Homeland Security said in a joint statement on Friday. “We believe, based on the scope and sensitivity of these efforts, that only Russia’s senior-most officials could have authorized these activities.”

The Washington Post, June 14, 2016 Russian government hackers penetrated DNC, stole opposition research on Trump

Russian government hackers penetrated the computer network of the Democratic National Committee and gained access to the entire database of opposition research on GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump, according to committee officials and security experts who responded to the breach.

The intruders so thoroughly compromised the DNC’s system that they also were able to read all email and chat traffic, said DNC officials, and the security experts

Fact: Trump’s first act as President is the unleashing of Vladimir Putin

CNN November 15, 2016 Trump, Putin speak about future of US-Russia ties

Putin “called to offer his congratulations on winning a historic election,” according to a Trump statement. The two leaders discussed issues including shared threats, strategic economic issues, and the historical US-Russia relationship.

The two men also spoke about working to normalize relations between the two countries and emphasized the importance of creating a foundation of bilateral ties through trade, the Kremlin said.

They also discussed the need for “joint efforts in the fight against common enemy No. 1” — international terrorism and extremism.

November 15, 2016 – A week after the election Trump unleashes Putin

Fact: The hack was an attack on our political process and thus and act of war.

Fact: Trump is protecting the perpetrator.

Here’s what bothers me the most.

This is the most devastating attack on the United States in the
history of our Nation.

And most of us still want to deny that it happened.

If you haven’t seen this 2013 Episode of the Black Mirror, The Waldo Moment, have a look.

It’s eerie viewing in light of the outcome of the 2016 U.S. elections.
