A Definition of Evil

“I was motivated by absolutely humane feelings. I never had any other intention. I never had any other belief than that those poor miserable creatures-that the painful lives of these creatures were to be shortened.”

Karl Brandt, the physician who suggested that Hitler use poison gas to exterminate the Jews.

Portrait of Dr. Karl Brandt

To Karl Brandt, the people he murdered weren’t human.

They were creatures.

They were “those” poor miserable creatures.

Brandt told himself that killing Jews was an act of mercy; the behavior
of a civilized man.

M. Scott Peck, the psychiatrist who authored, The Road Less Traveled, described evil as a form of “militant ignorance“.

He addressed human evil in “People of the Lie: The Hope for Healing Human Evil“.

According to Peck an evil person tells himself he’s doing good to keep up
an image of perfection.

They,

  • Deceive others as a consequence of their own self-deception
  • Project their sins onto specific targets (scapegoats) while being
    apparently normal with everyone
  • Commonly hates with the pretense of love, for the purposes of self-deception as much as deception of others.
  • Abuses political (emotional) power (“the imposition of one’s will upon others by overt or covert coercion”
  • Maintains a high level of respectability based on lies.
  • Is consistent in his or her sins. Evil persons are characterized not so much by the magnitude of their sins, but by their consistency (of destructiveness)
  • Is unable to think from the viewpoint of their victim (scapegoat)

For me, the most horrific aspect of the violence I experienced as a child was the worst anti-Semitic beatings were given by adults in the neighborhood.

I was that Jew.

That Christ killer.

The adults at that time felt they had a moral duty to debase and humiliate
me.

How is it different today?

How does it feel to the six-year-old son of impoverished immigrants who hears his parents described vermin?

What happens when a society abuses children as a matter of policy?

What happens to America with a President who incites violence?

M. Scott Peck defines evil as the use of cruelty against people who
cannot defend themselves.

Exclusive: Erik Prince Worked For Chinese Intelligence; Pence Targeted

From Louise Mensch

Exclusive: sources with links to American and Australian intelligence report that the Senate Intelligence Committee’s letter to Mike Pence, demanding information on his knowledge of Mike Flynn’s links to Russia, Turkey but also to China, relates to Erik Prince’s paid work for Chinese intelligence.

Robert Mueller’s investigation is focused on crimes of obstruction of justice and lying to the FBI, sources said. Vice President Pence headed the transition team, which is under investigation for multiple criminal acts, including the exposure of American assets in Russia, thought to have been performed by Boris Epshteyn. In the spring, sources told Patribotics that Mr. Epshteyn was an agent of the FSB, or Russian intelligence, as opposed to a mere asset of Russia. This outlet reported exclusively that Epshteyn was one of four men named in James Comey’s first application to FISC, the court that decides whether or not to to grant a FISA…

Scapegoating Children in a Calculated Ploy to Win Votes is Child Abuse.

In January 2014, the California GOP made a calculated decision to target trans students in a ballot measure to overturn new protections for California’s transgender students.

The California Referendum on AB 1266, Transgender Student Participation Based on Gender Identity (2014)  did not make it to the ballot but that didn’t stop the GOP from scapegoating trans people to win votes in the 2016 election.

The RNC made a strategic decision to start a new culture war over the rights
and humanity of an estimated 700,000 transgender Americans.

The result is Trump’s ban on trans people in the military.

This cynical intrusion of the lives of innocent Americans is already
unacceptable.

But to start by using the children of California is repugnant.

If you agree with me, please call your GOP reps and tell them to stop toying
with the lives of innocent people.

Tell them you want policies, not scapegoats!

Saturday in The Park

Last week I posted photos of a chill afternoon at San Francisco’s Alamo Square Park.

This week Alamo Square Park played host to a different sort of event:

“Counter-protesters converged on San Francisco’s Alamo Square Saturday afternoon even after local officials had called off a planned and permit-granted protest by right-wing group Patriot Prayer the day before.”

Newsweek

I love San Francisco.

We like to start our anti-fascist marches with a group hug:

The Speaker: “I want you to go right up to that person and give that person a big ass hug!”

I couldn’t get into Alamo Square Park; it was packed and marchers were still gathering.
